from a television show on the history of food::
Average Greek ate less than 3 lbs of meat a year. The Upperclass ate more. Butchers titled by the meat they specialized in. Still they saw it as a secondary food source.
Romans thought meat impure & that it rotted as soon as killed - except for pork which they thouht was good.
Since blood was the life force & th gods controlled the process of life and death the Hebrews drained animals of blood as part of a sacrifice.
To Arabs to dream of fish was a sign of good fortune and fertility.
